Feni is a traditional, geographically protected spirit produced exclusively in Goa, India. It is distilled from either cashew apples or coconut palm sap. Known for its potent, distinct tropical aromas, it boasts an alcohol content of 40% to 45%.The origins and production methods of feni highlight a rich historical and cultural tradition:

Cashew Feni

Made from crushed, fermented cashew apples (a process introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century)

Coconut Feni

Made from the fermented sap of coconut palms, representing a pre-colonial distilling tradition in the Konkan region

Distillation Process

The fermented juice undergoes a double-distillation process. The first single distillation is called urrak (around 15% ABV), while the second distillation yields the final feni spirit.

Geographical Indication (GI): Feni was the first Indian liquor to receive a GI tag, ensuring it can only be legally manufactured using traditional methods within the state of Goa.
